Black Forest Cake

  • 1 cup Selfraising Flour
  • 3 tbsp  Cocoa Powder (A)
  • 2 tsps Baking Powder
  • 1 1/4 cups Castor Sugar
  • 1/3 cup Fresh Milk
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1/3 cup Melted Butter
  • 1 1/2 tsp Vanilla Essence
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Cocoa Powder (B)
  • 1 1/4 cups Hot Water
  • 1/4 cup Kirsch or Rum
  • 1/2 tsp Almond Essence
  • 1 Can Cherry Pie Filling


First of all, combine the following ingredients: 3/4 cup castor sugar, flour, cocoa powder (A), baking powder and salt. Blend in milk, melted butter and vanilla essence and beat until the mixture is smooth. Spread into greased square pan.

Take another bowl and combine remaining castor sugar, brown sugar and cocoa powder (B) and sprinkle this batter evenly over the first batter.

Mix kirsch or rum with hot water and drizzle gently over batter. But do not stir.

Bake at 180°C for less than an hour (40-50 mins), or until the center is almost set. Leave to cool for a while before serving. This pudding is best eaten with chilled cherry pie filling as sauce. However, you can choose any filling to your liking.
