You will love this Walnut Apple Pie as it’s not very difficult to prepare and tastes wonderful. For apple desserts like this you should preferably use Granny Smith or green apples as they are tarty and juicy enough as well as suitable for baking.
- 210 g Plain Flour
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 50 g Cold Butter; chopped into pieces
- 40 g Lard; chopped into pieces
- 1 cup Ice Cold Water
- 330 g Granny Smith Apples; peeled and sliced
- 1/2 cup Walnuts; coarsely chopped (1/2 cm)
- 25 g Brown Sugar
- 1 tsp Cinnamon Powder
- 1 Small Egg; lightly beaten
- 3 tbsp Fresh Milk
- 8 g Castor Sugar
To prepare pie crust: Sift flour and salt together. Rub in butter and lard until flour mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Keep mixing and add cold water gradually until mixture turns stiff. Knead lightly using fingertips (not the whole palm) and roll out half the pastry to line the pie dish.
To prepare apple filling: Place 1/2 of apple slices onto lined dish and sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Cover with remaining apple slices and sprinkle evenly with brown sugar and cinnamon powder.
Roll out remaining pastry and cover filling. Moisten edge of lined dish and press edges together firmly to seal the pie. Trim off the excess pastry neatly with a knife.
Beat egg and milk together for glaze and brush over pie. Sprinkle with castor sugar.
Bake pie in preheated oven at 200ºC for 30 minutes or until pie turns golden brown.
Decorate pie as desired.
